The code doesn’t decide, you do.

Responsible AI, beyond the automation myth. The opening keynote for the launch of the Kristiania AI Center (KAI).

Camila speaking at the Kristiania AI Center launch, in front of a slide on relational ethics

AI is a socio-technical system. It lives inside social, political and economic contexts, and so do its harms.

Responsible AI tries to put fairness, accountability, transparency and societal well-being into practice. The hard part is bringing institutions, policymakers and the public up to speed with the pace and complexity of AI.

The talkTwo approaches, one gap

Principles and risk frameworks still miss something.

01

Principle-based

Frameworks grounded in ethical guidelines: what AI should respect.

02

Risk-based

Governance and regulation: how AI is controlled.

03

The gap

Complex ethical values rarely fit the technical metrics and benchmarks used in AI safety.

Bridging the gapRelational & pluriversal ethics

Relational ethics: not a new framework.

Drawing on ayni, the Andean principle of reciprocity and relational responsibility, I show how other knowledge systems already answer questions Western frameworks are still struggling to name.

Carol Gilligan Ethics of Care Moral reasoning rooted in relationships and context, not abstract rules.
African tradition Ubuntu “I am because we are.” An AI that optimises for the individual while degrading collective trust is not ethical.
South American tradition Buen Vivir · Sumak Kawsay Wellbeing of the individual within community — written into the constitutions of Ecuador and Bolivia.
